Introduction

Space has been a critical asset since the beginning of time, from the period when navigators started to use constellations to guide them across uncharted waters, to today, where the logistics for most of the free world have some dependency on space assets. 

  • But what does that mean in the context of space cybersecurity? 
  • How can we globally measure the value and prioritize risk to space assets through sovereign lenses? 

The answer is we cannot, and we as humankind will likely only agree on one genuinely global approach to space cybersecurity if something external forces us to. In my opinion, this sobering truth drives the massive efforts from most nations to develop the capabilities they need to survive Space Threats and Operational Risks to Missions (STORM)™. 

This article has two objectives. The first is to take a reader with zero knowledge of space and quickly educate them on why they need to be aware and contribute, if even by simply spreading awareness that #spaceisourcollectivefuture. The second is to demonstrate that we, as humankind, already have a common understanding that #spaceisourcollectivefuture.

Facing STORM

Everyone is familiar with weather conditions. The language may vary, but a tornado, hurricane, heavy rain, snow, and other conditions are already agreed upon regardless of what nation you belong to.
