Timothy Hoffman: Thank you for sharing your background with us. Can you tell us a bit about your journey? I understand you were in firefighting and paramedicine, and now you've moved into information security. That's quite a leap.
Steve Coffey: It was an interesting journey. At 18, I moved away for college and earned my EMT certification. About a year and a half later, I became a paramedic and worked in a nearby big city for several years. Then, I returned to my hometown as a firefighter and did that for a couple of years. During this time, I was also a hobbyist with computers and hacking. I wanted a solid backup plan in case public safety didn't work out for me, so I focused on information security and cybersecurity. I spent a lot of time on home labs, TryHackMe, and Hack The Box.
While working at the fire department, I developed a drone program that has now grown into a city-wide initiative. We use it for public safety and utility purposes. This experience allowed me to transition and refocus our program from a cybersecurity standpoint while pushing the drone program forward. I started exploring how to combine the two fields and leverage one program to improve the efficiency of another. This led to integrating pentesting techniques with commercially available drone platforms.
Timothy Hoffman: You went into IT and now you're a deputy coordinator for the drone program, interfacing with other industry leaders. Can you explain more about this niche....
